This pure cotton T-shirt commemorates Republic Day, which has been celebrated every year on October 7th since the founding of the GDR in 1949. On the last Republic Day in 1989, the state leadership toasted the guest of honour Mikhail Gorbachev in the Palace of the Republic, while the population protested for more freedom in front of the doors. In addition to the national colours and the date, the shirt shows the GDR coat of arms, consisting of a hammer, compass and spike wreath. These symbols represent the social classes of labour, the intelligentsia and agriculture.
