The seat of the former GDR parliament was also a popular venue for cultural events and famous far beyond the borders of Berlin. After the Berlin Palace was demolished in 1950, it was replaced with the Palace of the Republic. Built between 1973 and 1976 and eventually demolished in 2008, many people still have fond memories today of this architecturally interesting building with its diverse tourism and leisure facilities.
