This magnet commemorates Republic Day, which was celebrated annually on October 7th since the founding of the GDR in 1949. On the last Republic Day in 1989, the state leadership toasted the guest of honour Mikhail Gorbachev in the Palace of the Republic while the population demonstrated for more freedom outside the doors. In addition to the state colours and the date, the magnet shows the coat of arms of the GDR, consisting of a hammer, compass and wreath of corn. These symbols represent the social classes of workers, intelligentsia and agriculture.
